Home Theater Audio Systems Secrets Revealed!
Buying audio equipment can be daunting if you don't know your way around. Who are you suppose to trust? The salesman? He'll say everything you want to hear just for a piece of the commission.
Home Audio & Home Theater Amps: Do you know what (amps) really means for instance? Everybody seems to think they know what it means, the expression having been around for so long. Unfortunately, few know the true definition. In audio, there's three types of power; peak power, RMS power, and last but not least, music power. So let's get to it!
In consumer electronics everything is measured by specs, but when shopping for audio equipment, it's also a good idea to go listen before buying. However, since in today's high technology systems, it's somewhat hard to buy a bad system (unless you go very cheap) so I wouldn't worry about it too much. The most common problem for bad output is connectivity (attaching your cables or wiring).
With this segment, we will be your guide in understanding all of the meaningless terms that tend to confuse consumers when it comes to buying a good to excellent home theater audio system.
CHOOSING AN AMP!
A good amp should be heavy (not on the scale) but heavy in deliverance. In other words, a high current amplifier is much better than one that isn't! It will generally give you a much crispier sound at a given power rating, and won't distort the sound until you reach a very high level. As an example, a 500 watt high current amp is better than a 500 watt regular current amplifier. I don't need to tell you that most all well known manufacturers make high end receivers or amps.
WHAT IS POWER RATING?
How does one compare peak, RMS, and music (all in watts)? Let's begin with RMS power, which means Root Mean Square, and is the most conservative rating. You'll understand as we explain further. The important thing is that the RMS ratng be indicated on the equipment, since it signifies a quality manufacturer. I remember many years ago many of my friends and I buying Marantz because the RMS (20 RMS per channel) was indicated and was, and still is, an excellent amp. (It can also be called 'continuous
averagepower').
When you're comparing, what you're looking for is an 8 ohm reading or load. Don't buy any less. If you see that a manufacturer only quotes, in his specs, peak power only withoutRMS, be weary. Furthermore, if you see words like 'music power', run away!
Peak power is double the RMS. Peak Music Power Output (PMPO) is a term used by smart salesmen when trying to sell you small wattage speakers that can be made to sound like 100 watt speakers. Stay away from these types of speakers.
Remember, as I learned in IT school, that volts X amps = watts. So how many watts RMS do you need per channel from your amp or receiver, all depends on your speakers.
YOU WANT SPEAKERS THAT SOUND LIKE THEY`RE SPEAKING TO YOU!
The sensitivity of speakers is rated in DeciBel Sound Pressure Level (dB SPL), at 1 metre (3.3 ft.) distance, and at 1 watt of power. In other words, the higher the number the louder the speaker. This is what dictates the power you need from your amplifier for a proper listening level and pleasure. In fact, everytime you double the wattage, you add 3 dB to the loudness of a speaker.
Example: If you have a speaker that's rated at 90 dB sensitivity, and you feed it 2 watts, it will be 92 dB loud. If you feed it 4 watts, then it will be 94 dB loud and so on at a listening distance of 3.3 ft. Factor in the loudness rop-off at a 10 foot distance (about - 10 dB) and you can see why just 1 watt is plenty loud. As a further example, a 250 watt home theater receiver will output about 101 dB, and a 500 watt receiver will output about 104 dB.
In general it's a good idea to get an amp that is a bit more powerful than the max rating of your speakers. Why? Because, not enough power can cause your speakers to blow! In other words, you should have more power in your amp than you really need. If your speakers have a max rating of 80 watts, your amp should be about 100 watt RMS per channel. But, don't use much bigger as you'll have the same effect of blowing yourspeakers.
Now, we have Hz (hertz). Hertz is the frequency response. It is the ability to replicate sounds at different frequencies. It is usually stated as a minimum and a maximum value in Hz and usually with the +/- dB rating.
Example: if you have a rated frequency of 50 - 20,000 Hz +/- 3 dB, this simply means that the speaker is 3 dB louder or quiter at different frequencies between 50 to 20,000 Hz. The +/- dB rating is important, since without it, it could be anything including being totally inaudible (no sound). You absolutely need that dB rating, and the smaller it is the better it is. So in general, aspeaker that creates 50 Hz sound is going to be much more expensive than a speaker that creates 65 Hz sound, even though both speakers can attain 20,000 Hz.
You are now a pro in understanding the workings of audio, and no salesman will ever be able to fool you in your purchase of audio equipement. Armed with this information, you can generally buy online without any problems as long as you read the specs with the offer. All you need to do is remember that the output of your receiver or amp in RMS wattage has to be somewhat stronger than your speakers can take, but not that much stronger!

Stream High Definition Audio From Your PC to Your Home Theatre - Audio System
This article is designed for instruction on how to setup the High Definition Audio Stream from your PC to your Home Theatre / Audio System. Discover the music you never heard on your Vinyl Records, or even on CD. This setup will show you how to configure your PC to deliver "Studio Quality", 24 bit, 48,000 Hz sampling rate sound to your Home Theatre / Audio System. And this sound quality is awesome!
Home Audio & Home Theater The instructions in this article are based on the MS-VISTA OS and the Realtek High Definition Audio Device, for demonstration purposes. However, this configuration will work and be setup very similar for the various High Definition Audio devices which come installed on most new entry level PC configurations, or older versions that contain the HD Audio. Most likely you will need only to purchase (1) HDMI cable to make this amazing sound happen. The first step in this setup is to determine if you have the current HD Audio chipset, and drivers installed on your PC. You will also need to verify you have an HDMI output on the PC. This is found on the motherboard and can be viewed on the rear of the PC case. You would normally use this output to attach your HD PC monitor, however, you most likely can use the motherboard DVI or VGA output for your monitor which will free up this output for streaming the HD Sound to your Audio System. You also need to verify that the Home Theatre system has an HDMI input available. After you have verified your HDMI input on the Audio System and the HDMI output on the PC, connect your cable between the PC output and Audio System input.
At this point in the setup, you just need to check the Audio Configuration, and adjust if necessary, and then you will be into the R&R, R&B, and any other of the music styles available.
To verify the current configuration of the sound on your PC.
Click on Start, Control Panel, Hardware and Sound.
Under the Hardware and Sound heading, the 3rd option down is Sound, and to the far right you will see Manage Audio Devices. You will most likely see a list of installed devices.
Click on the Digital Output Device (HDMI) to configure.
Click on the Properties button in the Controller Information Section.
In the High Definition Audio Device, verify that you have the High Definition Device installed, and the device is working properly. Then click the Driver tab next to the General tab, and update device drivers if necessary.
That's it and now you should be ready to Listen to the Music.
A couple of quick tips, make sure you have any other speakers on your PC disconnected from the back of the PC, and any headsets too!
Reboot your PC making sure your HDMI is connected to your PC and Audio System. Make sure the audio is turned on, and the HDMI function is selected as the sound source on your Home Theatre / Audio System. When the system reboots, you will be able to hear the MS-Windows sound. If not, check to make sure that your sound is turned up for both the PC and Home Theatre / Audio system.
Now, for those of you who have watched the movie, "Brainstorm", get ready to knock your socks off. The sound is ultimate, clear, and with excellent separation, either loud or soft. Rhapsody Music has a great selection of music, and with the paid subscription, you will get the high Quality sound. Try out some live Hendrix (Jimi Plays Berkley), Aerosmith(Little South of Sanity), or (3) Doors Down.
Even the older tunes have excellent sound separation. Try Frank Sinatra, (Fly me to the Moon), or Nat King Cole(Route 66). Even with Cher's (Half Breed) you can hear the Indian drums clearly in the background.

About Soundcards, Audio-Interface and USB Mixers For Computer Based Home Music Production
A soundcard is what lets your computer play music. It also lets it understand sounds. In music production a soundcard is what lets you record and play back sound. There are many, many, many soundcards on the market, and most are not meant to do much more than playback music and movie audio. Even most of the top-line cards are meant for high quality playback for games.
Home Audio & Home Theater There is another device called an audio-interface. Used in recording this device does the same basic things as a soundcard when it comes to recording, but it also includes a pre-amp that boosts the signal. That signal boost helps get rid of the problem of low and bad quality recordings.
Another important difference is that an audio-interface generally has connection ports for real microphones and instruments. Most soundcards can only support the small mics used for chatting, although better quality ones can support audio connections that might let you hook up other mics and instruments. However you will have to use adapters, and an important thing to remember is that the more times a signal has to move through an adapter, the worse the quality gets.
So now we know that a soundcard is best for playing music and basic recording functions, like speaking. If you want to record singing, or someone playing an instrument properly, you need to invest in an audio-interface.
An even better investment for a serious home producer is a USB mixer. A USB mixer offers the same ability to interface real instruments as a USB audio interface, but also gives you the ability to mix your recordings just like they do in a larger studio.
A mixer board lets you adjust the volume that a signal is recorded at. This helps you get a fine tuned recording, making it much easier to sync your volume levels in a song. More important is the fact you can record more than one signal at a time. Depending on the number of inputs, a whole band can record a song in real time. This is good for a band wanting to record a live track, or album. With a good enough quality laptop, a USB mixer board, and some extra recording gear, you can record a whole performance.
Another important thing a mixer can do is split a signal out to other sources. This can be used for basic things like using headphones, or for hooking up an effect, or effects for the signal. Sometimes you want to record with effects already in place, a mixer lets you do that.
A mixer board also has built in EQ, or equalization. This lets you adjust how your signal is recorded. It can be used to shave out unwanted sounds, to boost the frequency ranges of what you are recording, and/or to generally get a fine tune on your recording.
Many USB mixers have some built in effects. Most often compression is included. Compression is used to control the volume of the signal automatically. It can be used as simply as making sure that your levels don't go outside of a certain range, or for very specific sculpting of what is being recorded.
So now you know the differences between a soundcard, an audio-interface and a USB mixer. There is a large amount of price overlap with these devices. Using this information, with what you know about your computer and most importantly your needs in recording, you can make an educated decision for what you need to buy.

The Best Home Recording Software on the Market
When it comes to your music, only the best will do. From the microphones to the sound cards, you want the highest quality equipment and software at the lowest possible price. There are many excellent home recording software programs on the market, each with its own unique benefits and uses.
Home Audio & Home Theater Software Synthesizer
When it comes to home recording software, synthesizers are the nuts and bolts of the operation, valiantly stepping in where mere voice and live instrument recordings fall short. Spectrasonics Omnisphere meets every expectation and then some, with a variety of sounds, synthesis, and blending techniques.
Audio Editing Software
Sony's Sound Forge is the ultimate editing software, leaving just one decision: should home recording studio owners choose the stripped down Sound Forge Audio Studio or splurge on Sound Forge 9? Sources say Sound Forge 9 is the best choice for serious editors, with everything you will need to master your tracks and sample other people's.
Format Transfer Software
Acoustica Spin It Again is usually used for transferring analog formats to digital. It offers the best in clean up tools, making it easy to achieve professional quality without professional experience. Because this program is incredibly simple to use and inexpensive as well, it is a clearly good choice for home recording studios.
Instrumental Samples
Propeller Abbey Road Keyboards Reason Refill Pack offers a wide range of sounds, many of them keyboard sounds as the name would suggest. These are excellent for adding depth to an otherwise lackluster track. Although it is a refill pack, it offers a variety that could easily stand on its own.
Voice and Harmony Software
Antares Technologies Harmony Engine comes from a company that released the pitch correction feature that has become a staple at major recording studios all over the world. This harmony synthesizer is equally amazing, allowing users to create their own backup singing and harmonies without headaches. The sound quality is good enough to be classified as mind-blowing.
Although these are all excellent software packages, they are just a few of the many exceptional programs out there. Before purchasing you should know exactly what you want and what you can handle, so the software you choose is just perfect for you. Outfitting your home recording studio with high quality software is a crucial step to success, so this is a step that cannot be over thought.

Achieve Audio and Visual Perfection in Your Home Theater!
Whether your brand new home theater system is set up in your living room, theater or media room, or man-cave, you know it is a project you have invested time, money and energy into. Researching for the best television, media and gaming devices and surround sound speakers your budget can afford took a little time, but now you have the big screen of your dreams; all of the media devices to watch your favorite movies with; the most recent releases of gaming platforms; a killer surround-sound stereo speaker setup that will rattle your neighbor's windows and you have the biggest and best recliner that does everything but take out the trash. You are ready for the big debut of your pet project, well you think you are but there are a few things to double check and consider before the first movie or game night premiere. You want to optimize your home theater and here is how.
Home Audio & Home Theater We have all suffered the annoyance that comes with a bright spot or white out on the TV screen that comes from a window or a too bright lightbulb in the living room lamp. It is frustrating to have part of the screen that you can view blocked out in such a way. When setting up the positioning of your television in your home theater system, consider this as one of the main factors when deciding where to place your TV. If you plan on having many visitors for movie night or game night, you'll need to consider the angle of every potential participant and make sure there aren't any unnecessary lights beaming in on the screen. If a window can't be helped, invest in some blackout curtains to help with daytime viewing. Lamps and other lighting fixtures can of course be moved to another location in the room.
Now that you have the TV in the perfect place in the room, the next thing you want to consider for the best audio experience is the placement of your speaker setup. Many surround sound speaker systems offer crystal clear "hear a pin drop" sound, but if the speakers aren't setup properly, then surround sound becomes "mostly in the front" or "too loud in the back" sound. Special effects sounds can overwhelm and drown out important dialogue, so you really want to experiment while setting up your speakers. Many speaker systems come with a suggested arrangement for the speakers. This should be a good guideline for you to use but if your room won't accommodate such setups, then you can arrange the speakers and do a few test runs until you have the perfect balance of sound in the room. Don't block any of the speakers with décor or furniture; this can impair the best available sound if you block the speaker in any way.
Now that the view and sound is perfect, make sure you have plenty of batteries for all of your device remotes, and keep your remotes in one spot so you don't worry about misplacing them. Now, cook up your favorite munchies and break out some beverages and enjoy the payoff from all of your hard work!

Surround Sound Systems - How to Hook Up Surround Sound For Your Home Theater System
If you really want to feel the excitement of watching a movie in your own home, then you have to get a surround sound system.
Home Audio & Home Theater You may already have the big screen in your room, but if you are not able to hear the soundtrack at its best, then you're missing out on half the fun!
However, many people feel that installing a surround sound system is too difficult - and that it's too complicated for them to hook up.
Well, it's not that difficult - follow these points to understand what you need to get your own surround sound set up.
1. Decide on the surround sound configuration you want.
Most modern DVDs come with a 5.1 surround soundtrack - so a 5.1 speaker setup is the most common speaker system that people have. This system has six speakers - a center speaker, front left and right, surround left and right and a subwoofer (for the bass). However, other common configrations are 7.1 and 7.2 surround sound speaker systems.
2. Buy an AV receiver/amplifier and speaker package - or a home theater in-a-box system.
The AV receiver is the amplifier for your speakers - and the processor for the 5.1 surround soundtrack. You will have to buy a separate 5.1 speaker package to connect to the surround sound receiver - and probably the speaker cable too. The main advantage of an AV receiver is that you can connect many different external devices to it - such as DVD players, Blu-ray players, cable TV boxes, DVD recorders etc.
A home theater in-a-box system (HTiB) will come with the amplifier, speakers and all the cabling in one package - and will often have a built-in DVD/Blu-ray player too. However, there is often limited scope for connecting other devices to this type of system.
3. Connect the system together.
- Connect the speakers to the speaker outputs on the AV receiver using the speaker cables. Make sure you connect the center speaker to the center speaker output, the front left speaker to the front left speaker output etc.
- Connect the HDMI output of your DVD player to the first HDMI input on the receiver. This will send the DVD picture and the sound to the receiver.
- Connect the HDMI output port on the AV receiver to the first (maybe only) HDMI connection on your TV. The AV receiver will use this to send the picture to the TV screen.
- Run the automatic speaker setup for the AV receiver (most have this). This will send a test signal around your speakers and set a good balance.
4. Play the movie!
5. How it all works
- When you press play on the DVD player, the video and audio signals are sent to the AV receiver down the HDMI cable - make sure you select the correct input on the AV receiver and it will receive the signal.
- The AV receiver then sends the picture to the TV - make sure you select the correct input on the TV (the TV may switch to the correct input when it gets the signal).
- The AV receiver also sends the audio to the speakers. It should automatically receive the 5.1 mix on the DVD and send it out to the speaker system in surround sound.
Summary
So there we have it, a quick checklist of what you need to buy to get a surround sound system in you home - and how you connect everything together. If you need more detailed information on this process, then follow the links below.
Have fun!
